Impulse – Music in Motion

‘Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony is already a work of raw emotion, and seeing it embodied so fully takes us straight to the heart of the composer’s angst’

The Scotsman

Scottish Ensemble's newest project, Impulse – Music in Motion, turns the concert format into a physical, visceral experience for both orchestra and audiences. Playing from memory, the musicians are set free to inhabit and express the depths of feeling of two favourite works for string ensemble: Tchaikovsky’s Serenade and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony.

These pieces span the spectrum of human emotion, from the raw despair of Shostakovich’s score to the jubilant euphoria of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece. Choreographed by longstanding collaborator Örjan Andersson, this dynamic staging transforms the concert hall into a space of connection and energy, where familiar music feels entirely new.

Founded in 1969, Scottish Ensemble has earned a reputation for ground-breaking cross-artform projects that redefine how classical music can be shared with audiences and connect with contemporary life. With this project, it develops this commitment in new directions. With exceptional musicianship and innovative choreography, Impulse is an unforgettable celebration of music in motion – an exhilarating sensory experience for audiences.

‘To have the music so ingrained that the need for its written reminder is unnecessary allows for a deeper relationship between each player and the work, and with each other’

The Arts Desk

‘The importance of memorising music while working with a choreographer is obvious, because we need the freedom to move. But there’s more to it than that, because what the memorising process can bring is that you become more aware and conscious of your of your body. You become more at one with the whole physicality of playing’
