Laurent Pelly and Donizetti
“With Donizetti, every note, every chord has a dramatic significance, drives the plot, and breathes life into the comedy…..There’s nothing in it [Don Pasquale] that you could take out, nor could you add anything to it – it really is brilliant.” Laurent Pelly
Wherever you are this winter, there is an opportunity to see a Laurent Pelly, Donizetti production: L'Elisir d'amore has just completed a run at the Opéra national de Paris; Don Pasquale opens at La Monnaie De Munt on 9 December; Viva la Mamma! is at Grand Théâtre de Genève (Opéra des Nations) from 21 December; La fille du régiment opens at The Metropolitan Opera, New York on 7 February, with Lucia di Lammermoor opening at the Wiener Staatsoper in Vienna in early February.
If you aren't in the mood for Donizetti, this Saturday sees the premiere of two further Laurent Pelly productions: Massenet’s Cendrillon at Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Les Contes d'Hoffmann at Deutsche Oper Berlin.
