Moshinsky's Alzira to premiere in Buxton
On Friday 7th July, Verdi’s Alzira will complete the trilogy of early Verdi titles at the Buxton International Festival thanks to the ingenious direction of internationally celebrated Verdi specialist Elijah Moshinsky and the Festival’s Artistic Director Stephen Barlow.
Based on the play Alzire, ou les Américains by Voltaire, the opera is set in 16th century Peru, where the love affair between two Peruvian natives, Zamoro and Alzira, is set against a fight for independence by the tribesmen against the Spanish rule of the conquistadors. Sung in Italian and with English side-titles, Alzira shows Verdi full of the inspiration of youth and innovation, making it ripe for revival in the perfect setting of Buxton’s modestly proportioned Opera House.
The cast will feature Kate Ladner as Alzira and Jung Soo Yun as Zamoro with music provided by the Northern Chamber Orchestra.
