'L'étoile' - a new production staged by James Bonas

James Bonas, who directed L’enfant et les sortilèges in the 2017/2018 season of Teatro Nacional de Sao Carlo in Lisbon, opens a new production of Chabrier's L'étoile in Lisbon.

The inventive and entertaining opera bouffe, based on a libretto by Eugène Leterrier and Albert Vanloo, combines the surreal with farce and poetry. Very popular in its time, it was considered a masterpiece by Stravinsky.

Bonas' staging shows the true potential of this memorable piece, revealing a baroque sense of colour and creativity in its exuberance, connected with a deep awareness of contemporary issues, through his use of an imaginative set made of recycled goods and bamboos.
