Ilan Volkov has been appointed Principal Guest Conductor of Brussels Philharmonic from the 2022/23 season. His appointment follows the recent news that Kazushi Ono will become the new Music Director in September, the two appointments marking a new chapter for the orchestra that focuses on rejuvenation, advancement and innovation.

Volkov said: ‘I am thrilled to embark on this adventure with Brussels Philharmonic. During the several projects that I was able to work on with the orchestra over the last year, I felt the openness and appetite to discover new musical ground. The level of the orchestra and the individual musicians is so high that as Principal Guest Conductor I will have all the ingredients necessary to explore new horizons. Together we will build a laboratory, a dynamic hub for the development and performance of new music.’

Gunther Broucke, General Manager of Brussels Philharmonic said: ‘Ilan’s energy and curiosity are fully in keeping with the orchestra’s DNA: the dual role of performer and researcher fits him like a glove. Besides conducting concerts, he will launch new collaborations with a wide variety of artists and will explore the boundaries of the orchestral machine. Together we will take a deep dive into the laboratory!’

Volkov conducted the Brussels Philharmonic last week during the sold out opening concert of Flagey Piano Days and previously worked with the orchestra in March and November 2021. He also currently serves as Principal Guest Conductor of BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, an appointment he as held since 2009, Artistic Director of Tectonics, and co-Artistic Director of I&I Foundation.
