Double win for Laurent Pelly at the International Opera Awards 2016
On Sunday 15 May 2016 at the Savoy Theatre, London, the winners of the International Opera Awards were announced in a ceremony hosted by BBC Radio 3 presenter Petroc Trelawny.
Not only did Laurent Pelly win the Best Director Award, he also managed to get a second one with the Best Rediscovered Work Award for Le Roi Carotte!
Performed in December 2015 at Opéra de Lyon, Offenbach's fairy-tale comic opera revival, in collaboration with adapter and author of new dialogue Agathe Mélinand, is a perfect example of Pelly's excellent instinct for staging and costumes, bringing a complicated piece back to life with his usual sense of imagination, good taste and humour.
This summer, Glyndebourne's new production of Béatrice and Bénédict will see his usual team reunited (set design: Barbara de Limburg, dialogues: Agathe Mélinand and costumes by Pelly himself). It is already a sell-out and promises to be another vibrant experience!
