Polish opera director Mariusz Treliński has joined Maestro Arts for worldwide general management. Treliński has been Artistic Director of Polish National Opera since 2008 and worked in prestigious opera houses around the world. His many accolades include Best Director at the 2018 International Opera Awards.

Treliński trained and won prizes as a film director before turning to opera and brings his cinematic eye to productions, often drawing on the styles of classic films and using innovative lighting and camera angles. Since his early days he has collaborated exclusively with stage designer Boris Kudlička, and he regularly works with the world’s leading conductors.

His recent productions include Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde with Simon Rattle at the Metropolitan Opera, Prokofiev’s The Fiery Angel conducted by Kazushi Ono and Bassem Akiki for the Festival d’Aix and Polish National Opera, Moniuszko’s Halka for Theater an der Wien and Polish National Opera, and Die tote Stadt at La Monnaie.

This season he has directed a new production of Korngold’s Die tote Stadt, in a Covid-proof redesign, and will stage Hindemith’s Cardillac for Polish National Opera and Oper Köln. His productions for Polish National Opera will include Halka and Madama Butterfly, as well as La traviata, which will also be presented at the Savonlinna Opera Festival.

Treliński has won praise and critical acclaim throughout his career. The Financial Times described his production of The Fiery Angel as ‘A benchmark production… a hallucinatory nightmare… Treliński walks the razor’s edge between the explicit and the implied, and he does it so well that we are soon unsure of what we have seen. Did that wallpaper just move? Is that a vision of Christ or a demon? Is she mad, or are we? A heady mix of drugs and psychosis in an underworld of glittery perversion sucks us all into Renata’s vortex.’

Treliński’s production of Die tote Stadt is available to watch online until 31 December.
