A fun and feisty trip through the woods with Hansel and Gretel in Seattle
Humperdinck’s much-loved opera Hänsel und Gretel opened on Saturday at the Seattle Opera. Director Laurent Pelly created this fantastical production for the Glyndebourne Festival, now seen for the first time in the US under the guidance of revival directors James Bonas and Christian Räth. With clever and colourful set designs by Barbara de Limburg, the action takes place in the aisles of the Witch's shopping-mall residence, while the lost brother and sister’s parents are reduced to living in a cardboard box. The production is a richly imagined, comedic and horror-ridden critique of the consumerism that pervades contemporary culture.
The cast features Ashley Emerson as Hansel, Sasha Cooke as Gretel, and John Easterlin as the witch.
Performances continue throughout October. For more information click here.
