‘Conducting is like dancing in the future. Everything that I do is about changing the sound, influencing time and providing people with information they need’
Conductor Matthew Straw enjoys meaningful artistic collaborations with orchestras and opera companies on both sides of the Atlantic. He is currently the Assistant Conductor of Opéra national du Rhin, where for the 2024–25 season he will work on productions such as Ariodante and La traviata and lead performances of Les contes d’Hoffmann in Reims.
As Assistant Conductor of Utah Symphony last season, he worked with Creative Partner David Robertson and Music Director Emeritus Thierry Fischer, and conducted the orchestra in more than 70 performances. As Assistant Conductor, he has worked with Kazushi Ono and Brussels Philharmonic, and with Ilan Volkov and ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
‘His technique is powerful and elegant, and in our private work together he continues to impress me by bringing very difficult pieces and musical excerpts to work on. I have taught many conductors through the years and Matthew is among the most talented’
