Humility and authority

Conductor

Artistic Director, Orchestre Ostinato
Associate Artist, Orchestre National de Bretagne

Chloé Dufresne endeared herself with a rare combination of humility and authority… Chloé took control of the piece, telling its story, picking at its colours, literally ‘conducting’ its magic’

With her clear technique, calm authority and imaginative palette, Chloé Dufresne has made her mark as a conductor within four years of graduating from the Sibelius Academy. She was selected as a Dudamel Fellow by Los Angeles Philharmonic, won prestigious prizes and serves as Associate Artist of the Orchestre National de Bretagne and Artistic Director of Orchestre Ostinato.

A background in vocal and choral conducting led Dufresne naturally to opera. In the 2024–25 season she conducts Carmen at Theater Magdeburg, Orphée aux enfers with Opéra national du Capitole, L’Elisir d’amore with Opéra national de Lorraine, La fille de Madame Angot by Charles Lecocq at Opéra de Nice and Opéra Grand Avignon, as well as a new production of Leonard Evers’ Humanoid at Semperoper Dresden.

She also continues to develop connections with European orchestras this season, including Orquesta Sinfónica de RTVE, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Gävle Symfoniorkester, Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie and working with Vienna Symphony in the Musikverein.

As well as conducting core repertoire, Dufresne enjoys new music and won a prize for her interpretation of music by Camille Pepin at the Besançon competition. Last season she conducted a programme of György Ligeti, Lucas Ligeti and Hannah Kendall with the Basel Sinfonietta, as well as conducting works by Ross Edwards, Cecilia Damström and Ville Raasakka.
