Tatyana van Walsum's costumes sparkle at the opening of Aida at the Salzburg Festival
The opening of Aida on Sunday at the Salzburg Festival promises to be a sparkling performance. Featuring costumes designed by Tatyana van Walsum incorporating thousands of Swarovski crystals; the event marks a five year collaboration.
In a production directed by Shirin Neshat and conducted by Riccardo Muti, Aida will be performed by Anna Netrebko wearing an elaborate costume inspired by the moon and bearing Swarovski crystals. Taking the sun as inspiration, Ekaterina Semenchuk's Amneris costume will be adorned by a gold and crystal collar.
The press were invited to preview the costumes this week and with each handmade collar taking around 250 hours to create and needing the input of three people, the head of costume, Jan Meier is understandably proud of the results.
