Katharina's Adriana Lecouvreur opens in Karlsruhe
On Saturday 1st April director Katharina Thoma delighted audiences in Karlsruhe with the premiere of Francesco Cilea's celebrated tragicomedy Adriana Lecouvreur, an opera in four acts based on a play of the same name.
The story is based on the myth of Adrienne Lecouvreur (1692-1730), who was regarded as the most important actress in Paris at the time and was revered beyond her death. Katharina's interpretation opts for a "juxtaposition of illusion and being, of stage and backstage, and thus the conflicts of artists". She updates the characters to the present time, and with the help of a revolving stage skilfully assembled by Dirk Becker, the historical context is anchored on a baroque showcase where the actors act silently, while at the same time others prepare themselves for the next scenes, circling around their emotions.
