Katharina Thoma's Adriana Lecouvreur opens in Karlsruhe
On Saturday, 1st April director, Katharina Thoma, delighted audiences in Karlsruhe with a new production of Francesco Cilea's celebrated tragicomedy Adriana Lecouvreur, an opera in four acts based on a play of the same name.
The story is based on the myth of Adrienne Lecouvreur (1692-1730), who was regarded as the most important actress in Paris at the time and was revered beyond her death. Katharina's interpretation opts for a "juxtaposition of illusion and being, of stage and backstage, and thus the conflicts of artists". She updates the characters to the present time, and with the help of a revolving stage skilfully assembled by Dirk Becker, the historical context is anchored on a baroque showcase where the actors act silently, while at the same time others prepare themselves for the next scenes, circling around their emotions.
