On the Richmond fair in Frankfurt with Katharina Thoma's latest production Martha
Katharina Thoma's new production of Flotow's rarely-performed comic opera Martha opened to an enthusiastic audience and rapturous applause in Frankfurt at the weekend. Also delighting the critics, describing the production as "original" and "outstanding".
The action takes place at Richmond Fair in 18th century England, however Katharina has opted for a modern take, with a staging that is original and full of flair, ranging from iPad matchmaking between Lady Harriet and Nancy, through a lively depiction of Richmond Fair and Oktoberfest, to a caravan representing the private quarters of the two ladies. Katharina and her team - set designer Etienne Pluss, costume designer Irena Bartels and lighting designer Olaf Winter - have created an colourful world, presented with great verve and imagination.
Conducted by Sebastian Weigle, the cast includes Maria Bengtsson as Lady Harriet Durham, Katharina Magiera as Nancy and A.J. G;ueckert as Lyonel.
