Carlo Rizzi brings a touch of the exotic to Bergen
Carlo Rizzi conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in an exotic programme of Nielsen's Aladdin Suite, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with Pablo Sáinz Villegas as the guitar soloist and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade. The concerts will take place on the 17 and 18 of September and promise to be an exquisite feast for the ears.
At the end of the 19th century, it was popular among Northern European composers to imbue their works with an exotic flavour from, for instance, the Middle East or Spain. Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade is a prime example, with its virtuosic unfolding of the Arabian Nights tales.
Carl Nielsen continued the tradition with his incidental music for a stage production of Aladdin, heard here in its popular suite form. With Flamenco and other indigenous dance styles as inspiration, perhaps Spanish composers felt less need to look beyond their own borders for material.
